Stolen Identity - What to do Next 

Stolen identity can happen to any one of us.  Some companies have identity theft programs already in place for their customers.  Metlife, Citigroup and Washington Mutural are a few offering free protectiion. 

Identity Theft Protection
1.)  Only carry what you need with you
2.)  If your mail security is questionable get a P.O Box
3.)  Never give any personal information out unless you called them using the phone number on your accounts
4.)  Never answer Information Update notices- email, phone, mail
5.)  Don't use passwords that are easy, like birth date, house number or name
6.)  Never carry Social Security Card with you
7.)  Distroy all personal paperwork
8.)  Use Credit Cards at safe sites and safe businesses only

Signs of Stolen Identity
1.)  Credit Card charges aren't from you- check often
2.)  Bill collectors notice on something that isn't yours
3.)  Credit History has bad marks
4.)  Rent Notice from someone unknown
5.)  Job information where you never worked
6.)  Warrent for your arrest for missing court date you knew nothing about
7.)  Tax Return says you already filed
8.)  Accounts of any kind that you know nothing about
9.)  Anything with your name on it that isn't your doing
10.) Medical Bills that where not from you

Fast Action:
1.)  File I.D. theft with the FTC to take to the Police
2.)  File Police Report- if they opened any new accounts
       This Blocks Fraudulent Information on Credit Report
       Collection of Debts Stop
       Extends Fraud Alert on your credit report
3.) Notify Creditors & Dispute Fraud transactions
4.)  Contact all companies that have fraudulent accounts in your name

Identity Theft Protection is offered at some banks.  A little protection to those at higher risk may consider buying some coverage.   A little education can go a long way to having your identity stolen and a good neighborhood watch program helps many communities.
