Winter's Song

by Victoria Luhring Realty Blog

Victoria said…..

Winter’s song

For those of us who grew up in Ohio accustomed to winter’s cold winds and snowstorms, the way Mother Nature decorates our world each December for the holiday season comes as no surprise. We may even be saddened if a mild winter denies us the burst of icy precipitation we anticipate during the weeks before Christmas, withholding winter’s frigid winds until January or February. The weather comes with the season. Something we expect, it is part of an unchanging, annually repeated connection to the past.

If the weather was music, we’d call it winter’s song. It’s a melody we’ve known since we were kids outside sledding and ice skating and building snowmen. There’s something genuine and wholesome about the rhythm and notes of that song. As adults we continue to hum that tune, paying it forward. We quietly strive to ensure that our own children or grandchildren appreciate the season’s sense of home and hearth and the spirit of giving and caring for others that is integral to December’s days. Those traditions are an important part of our memories of long ago Christmases.

I know it can be a hectic, often frustratingly busy time of the year, so I think we all benefit from pulling out those childhood memories in December. We need to examine them and acknowledge that much of their value comes from our shared memories of holiday traditions. But, with today’s frenetic lifestyles, how do we refresh those ideas of the simplicity of the holidays?

The way I do it is to think of a Christmas poem I read one year. It reached out to touch on my own memories from when I was a child growing up surrounded by the holiday’s mystery and the feelings it can create that last a lifetime. The poem’s first stanza reaches out to my past and, most likely, to yours:

“Christmas never changes

only pajama feet can find

the joy of that special early morning

on stairways down to hearth sides

and stockings full of memories,”

Some things don’t change. As sure as we tied ribbons around presents

and put tinsel on the tree then and still do now, recollections of our earliest childhood Christmases

stay with us. Subconsciously, they play a role in how we plan our holiday celebrations and perhaps how we decorate our homes inside and out. We may not realize why we like strings of colored Christmas lights more or less than smaller white lights or why we look forward so much to big family holiday dinners.

Like a Currier and Ives lithograph, the poem depicts a holiday scene of excited children rushing downstairs on Christmas morning to open presents under the tree and discover what Santa left in their stocking on the mantel. And whether kids grow up in an old farmhouse far out in the country with cold drafts around the windows or in a new home in the city, those pajamas with feet were a great way to keep warm, right? I believe that familiar childhood scene shines a spotlight on the feeling that the holiday season is a constant, unchanging reminder of what’s most important, of our faith and of family and friends and of taking a moment to cherish their places in our lives.

Have a wonderful holiday season.
